Trans-Generational Trauma describes the experience of ‘inherited’ disturbance (often unknown) that we have inherited from our ancestors. In this one day workshop we will examine (through the use of case examples, subjective experience and stories) how trauma is transmitted across multiple generations shaping our lives in unconscious ways.  A legacy of such trauma is deadness, and a lack of meaning making when there has been no witness to intolerable suffering. In Bion’s words we are dealing with ‘thoughts without a thinker’.

Helena will begin the day with a presentation of some ideas about Trans Generational Trauma.  She will draw on a specific case study to illustrate how her personal experience emerged in her countertransference with a client, and how reflections on her past, enabled consciousness, healing and resilience in her client.

This introduction will set a framework for a day in which participants will be facilitated to reflect  on their subjective experience.  Using a variety of experiential exercises, drawing on individual stories, and group associative responses, we will co-create a conversation about how an unnameable trauma can be transformed into potential reparation through the healing power of witnessing and the making of meaning.

Finally we will end the day with a discussion about clinical implications of what we have discovered and how our theories can help and/or hinder us in effective therapeutic work.

Please come prepared to reflect upon your own subjective, as well as clinical, experience of trans-generational trauma.
